Pompey lands Senegalese Sonko on loan

28th July

Senegalese defender Ibrahima Sonko has agreed to join championship side Portsmouth on a season long loan deal from Stoke City.

The 29 year old has seen little action for for the Potters since joining them from Reading in 2004 and was sent on loan in 2009 to Hull City.

Pompey on the other hand would be glad to secure the versatile defender as they look to bolster their squad ahead of their campaign to regain top flight English football next season.

Newly appointed manager of Portsmouth Steve Cotterill could not hide his delight at the capture of Sonko by saying, "He's a big, strong and very powerful defender.

"I've followed him for a while and I thought he did a fantastic job at Reading,"

Cotterill also told the club's official website that; "He's been a bit unlucky during his time at Stoke and hasn't had too many first-team opportunities, although he did spend time on loan at Hull last season. He just needs to get back playing football.

"We're very thankful to Stoke's chief executive, Tony Scholes, and to Tony Pulis for their help."
